George W. Cline - Private |
George W. Cline is my great grandfather. He was born abt 1824 in Georgia, died 18 Aug 1894 in Texas
According to records that were published by the North Carolina Division of Archives and History: '16th NC Infantry Company A April 1861-October 1862', George W. Cline, age 38 is listed with the Noncommissioned Officers and Privates as serving with the Thomas Legion Regiment and disignated Company A of that Unit. Later the company was transferred to the 39th Regiment, NC Troops, and designated Company K. Records show that two companies mixed together as one regiment, Thomas' Legion and Walker's Battalion. 'Record of Events for William Holland Thomas' Legion, Walker's Battalion, Levi's Battery Light Artillery, North Carolina Troops, April 1862-1864' states these volunteers were mustered in for local defense of the Carolinas, East Tennessee, Southwestern Virginia, and the Cumberland Mountains in Kentucky.

Nathan Leander Chapman - 2nd Corporal |
Nathan was born in Burke County, NC 14 Oct 1837. He has 28 items in his archival file. He enlisted 10 May 1861 at Morganton, Burke Co. NC. As I understand it his Regiment underwent a Regiment organizational change which dictated that all men were discharged and re-enlisted in the same unit. He was paid $77 and change and his papers says he was disabled. He had been sick for some time during the past year of service but he re-enlisted 23 Sep 1862 at Raleigh as a 2nd Corporal. He fought in many battles and was captured on 6 May 1864 in the battle of the Wilderness. He was sent to Point Lookout and on to Elmira, NY arriving on 14 Aug 1864. He was exchanged 29 Oct 1864. Given his condition as a POW and the chaos of the times I do not know if he was abler to rejoin his regiment. He died 14 Oct 1928 and is buried in the Shoup family cemetery in Morganton, Burke Co. NC. He was the grandfather of the wife of my 1st Cousin 2 x removed.
